"Weaving Sustainability: A Tale of Mulberry Silk and Women Empowerment"

Madhulika Choudhary

In the ever-evolving world of fashion, sustainability is emerging as a driving force, shaping not only the products but also the processes behind them. One fascinating example of this is found in the realm of sericulture, where the journey from cocoon to fabric weaves a narrative of environmental consciousness, social empowerment, and high-quality craftsmanship.

For me, sustainability in sericulture goes beyond just producing silk; it is about ecological harmony, respect for biodiversity, and the well-being of those involved in its creation. This agro-based industry, located in the Katihar district of Bihar and Birhum and Malda districts of West Bengal, stands out by minimising its ecological footprint at every step.

Eco-Friendly Farming Practices

- No fuel-guzzling machinery is used, reducing air pollution.

- Hand-held tools are employed in the plantation, promoting sustainable and traditional agricultural practices.

- The perennial mulberry plant not only provides high-quality silk but also contributes to soil preservation and offers vast green covers.

Waste Recycling and Community Involvement

- Silkworm rearing waste is recycled for mulberry garden preparation as organic manure.

- Villagers are encouraged to sell cattle manure to the plantation, creating an additional income stream.

- No chemical fertilisers and pesticides are used in the farming process, ensuring a chemical-free environment.

Final Product and Craftsmanship

- Handloom-woven mulberry silk fabric is the final product, showcasing the craftsmanship of women in a weaver’s cooperative.

- The fabric is versatile, allowing for dyeing, printing, and embroidery without compromising its integrity.

- Not trend-driven, the fabric serves as a neutral base for creativity, meeting the latest fashion trends effortlessly.

High-Quality and Chemical-Free

- Emphasis on producing 100% Indian and chemical-free mulberry fabric.

- Brands like Raw Mango, Good Earth, Rina Dhaka, and Payal Pratap appreciate the texture, weaving, and fall of the fabric.

The Benefits of Mulberry Silk

Mulberry silk isn't just a fashion statement; it's a choice for health-conscious and environmentally aware consumers.

- Breathable and sweat-resistant, regulating the body's temperature naturally.

- Hypoallergenic, as it is never treated with harsh chemicals.

- Improves complexion due to its chemical-free nature.

Developing a Sustainable Supply Chain

In the quest for sustainability, the journey doesn't stop at the fabric but extends to the source – the production of cocoons. The inclusion of women known as & "Pollu Didis" not only preserves traditionalskills but also ensures a direct link to a chemical-free environment. By incorporating these skilled women in the supply chain, the aim is to not only maintain product quality but also empower local communities economically.

As the fashion industry evolves, weaving sustainability into its fabric becomes imperative. The story of mulberry silk production in Bihar and West Bengal is a testament to the fact that fashion and sustainability can go hand in hand. By prioritising eco-friendly practices, empowering local communities, and delivering high-quality products, this venture sets a precedent for a conscious and responsible fashion future.
